The
recent installation of “The Joyous Dance”, on the grounds of the Woodlands
Academy of the Sacred Heart in Suburban Chicago, culminated Susan’s two year
effort to bring the monumental piece to life.
The eight and one half foot tall sculpture honored the spirit of a young woman,
Claire Joyce, who had touched so many hearts in her lifetime and left an
indelible memory in her untimely death.
The sculpture consists of five figures caught in the dance of life, capturing a
fleeting moment. Surrounded by children, the central figure radiates a serene
and contented aura and seems to embrace all. The children appear to jump and
spring in the joy of their youthful happiness.
The sculpture speaks to a moment in time; of innocence and youth, an experience
of life in an instant lost forever.
“The Joyous Dance” was created by the artist in her Baltimore studio and bronzed
by the New Art Foundry. Weighing eighteen hundred pounds, the bronzed sculpture
was brought to Chicago and unveiled on October 6th, 2001.
